The YaJagoff! Podcast - All about Pittsburgh

All about the cool stuff going on in Pittsburgh! There are a lot of podcasts, or PAWDcasts as you might say in Pittsburghese, but none this focused on what’s happening in Pittsburgh. Co-hosts John Chamberlin and Rachael Rennebeck talk with guests about food, entertainment, current events and, of course, Jagoffs! This weekly podcast is based on the Pittsburgh humor blog, YaJagoff.com.

Feb 18, 2019

Summary: The jagoffs landed back on the Northside and on Lockhart Street, this time with Developer Extraordinaire Al DePasquale.  Our host just may become the mayor of Northside due to his newest niche neighborhood makeover of Tripoli and James Streets with businesses, hotels and homes. Johnny Angel, resident Northside icon talks about the changes he has seen since the days of Allegheny Center Mall and record stores.  Ben Oaks of Cerebral Overload brings us back to present day with all of the high tech must haves, and our final episode wraps up celebrating 80 years of home makeovers with sponsors J&D Waterproofing and good eating greats Corelife Eatery. The Shelf Life String Band overtook the podcast and perhaps all of the Northside with the grass roots sounds of bluegrass strings.

Question of the day: Favorite Northside establishment/memory/iconic Northside thing?

3:38 Cydney Core Life: The sadness has set in that we will not see Cydney from Corelife Eatery on a weekly basis anymore since our fireplace tour is ending.  The good news is the Ahi Tuna and falafel are healthy options to drown our sorrows. Cydney admits that she could become a mobile delivery service to remain the go-to food option for the Ya Jagoff podcast.  Plus get app bonuses ala Cydney.

9:11 Shawn J&D Waterproofing and home owner Al DePasquale:  Shawn addresses the changes from technology to home improvement options over 80 years at J&D Waterproofing and how to treat old homes with character as well as the new structured houses.  Shawn successfully ends water damage, but also can spot a gem of a home a mile away, like Al’s 1800’s home that has been increased to three times its original size.  This gorgeous home touts cathedral ceilings with wall-based water falls as a focus for the unique sitting room.  DePasquale chose Northside because it encompasses sport events, night life, easy living, and is a gateway to downtown. In Al’s opinion the people and the landscape of the Northside is what makes them the next niche neighborhood.

26:53 Ben OaksThe Cerebral Overload blog and podcast creator makes his annual winter debut to talk about the recent Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. From the gigantic monitor that could take up a room for even better viewing views, to the ever so helpful doorbell, these tech savvy supplies have become the gadget geek’s water cooler talk.  Plus, the healthcare industry could have a new phenom with the EKG watch.

39:48 Johnny Angel: This Pittsburgh icon lived and loved the Northside since 1952.  He likes the idea of a street car comeback and admits that Allegheny Center Mall was not a Northsider’s favorite location. He favors the days of old and preserves them at his Ginchy Stuff museum on Beaver Avenue where Trip Advisor continues direct out-of-towners. What is JA’s favorite all-time place in the Northside?

52:41 Shelf Life String Band: This blue-grass phenom rehearses without fail every week.  While they have performed for Mayor Bill Peduto, and were seen weekly at the Park House, their rendition of the “Pens” song is their claim to fame.  Wait until you hear all of the unique instruments and recognize the eclectic musicians who round out this great sounding band.
